At the end of the lake, the ferry lets you off at the town of Stehekin. If there was ever a place that was completely "off the grid" in the US, this would be it. Population of 90, and everything is brought in by boat or barge. Only satellite phones. They have a one room school house for grades 3-8. One teacher, who has been there for 30 years. They sure do live in a pretty place.

I assume that school was not in session--would have loved to have seen a real one room school house.
I was there on a Saturday, so obviously nobody was there. This building is actually no longer in use. They built a newer one down the street which isn't bigger, just probably a lot warmer in the winter. The desks in the old school were charming - almost like the pews in Little House on the Prairie.
Oh, and they only built the new one about 10 years ago.
